Jazz

Jazz dance is an exploration of style and presentation; it emphasizes balance, flexibility, coordination, strength, and creative expression. In our jazz classes at Fineline, you will focus on learning proper dance technique and alignment, improving performance quality, and developing complex rhythms and patterns. Our class curriculum is based on ballet technique layered with traditional jazz movement—classes include a proper warm-up, stretches, strengthening exercises, isolations, across-the-floor, progressions, and combinations. Students will be exposed to various styles of jazz and a wide range of classic, contemporary, pop, rock, and indie music will be used.

As students’ progress through each level the curriculum will become increasingly more complex and intricate. All leveling is subject to evaluation by the instructor.

About Fineline Dance Recommendations

Requirements are based on safe practices for physical health, proper development, and a well rounded dance curriculum. Age, physical development, and strength are key factors in leveling.

Recommendations are not requirements, but instead are suggestions made to support growth across all dance styles and help to build a more versatile performer.

Our studio is equipped to provide rigorous training for those with professional aspirations, while remaining flexible to those with goals outside the professional realm. Students with busy outside schedules, or students who want to try dance for the first time, can and are encouraged to participate with even just one dance class a week!

We have designed our leveling for all ages, abilities, and commitment levels.

Jazz Class Levels and Dress Code

Leveling ages are approximate; faculty input and experience also factor into leveling.

Ballet is highly recommended to supplement this style, reinforce technique, and build strength.

All dancers are invited to perform in the Spring DanceFest Performance. Choreography for DanceFest is learned in the second and third Trimester classes. Any additional rehearsals outside of class will be announced with plenty of notice and are kept to a minimum.
